Campus Modernization Project

On Wednesday, May 18, 2011, Carle broke ground on the final phase of its Campus Modernization Project, a nine-story patient bed tower on the main campus in Urbana. The project was approved in 2008, but was on hold during uncertain economic conditions. Plans were revised, decreasing costs by an estimated $17 million, and with state approval, construction on this state-of-the-art facility began in spring 2011.

By enhancing and consolidating services for cardiovascular, neurosciences and intensive care, Carle will be better able to address emergent, acute and chronic conditions to improve the overall health of the community. The new bed tower will include 136 single patient rooms to replace inadequate rooms from buildings constructed in the 1960s and 1970s.

By modernizing the campus, Carle Foundation Hospital can better meet the healthcare demands of the residents in east central Illinois. Construction should be complete in 2013.
Highlights of the project include:

• A new nine-story, 390,000 square-foot tower.
• 100 percent private patient rooms.
• The Carle Heart and Vascular Institute – a key component of this new structure. It will encompass outpatient and inpatient cardiovascular services, including eight catheterization labs and the relocation of cardiac intensive care, stepdown and medical beds within the bed tower.
• Enhanced intensive care facilities, serving both adults and children.
• The latest in equipment and technology, fostering an environment for Carle Foundation Hospital and the University of Illinois at Urbana to better conduct translational research.
