The Women’s Legacy Circle has been supporting Carle initiatives since forming in 2009, but the group of women with a vision made 2020 the year of giving the largest single donation – $75,000. Their gift will support Community Health Initiatives, which provides an array of community-based services including the Carle Mobile Health Clinic, Mobile Market, Healthy Beginnings, Family Foundations, Faith Community Health, Rural Health & Farm Safety and Home Health.
The donation recently arrived in the form of a new transport van and eight 10-foot-by-10-foot tents to support a wide range of activities such as health screenings, vaccination clinics, health fairs and other community events. The gift provides organization, efficiency and protection for staff and community members seeking services. The tents can be used individually or connected together to add the exact space needed for each event. Staff can convert the tents, which have heating/cooling units into exam rooms, with portable treatment tables, stools, basic equipment and a hand-washing station. The support vehicle is used for equipment transport, distribution of seasonal items (i.e. clothing, books, school supplies, food boxes, and more), or simply by itself for various events and tasks.

“By having the vehicle and tents, along with other Carle and community resources, we’re able to more effectively focus our efforts and improve the health of communities,” she said.
From the start in 2009, the Women’s Legacy Circle has used annual dues to support patient-focused initiatives suggested by Carle employees. The group focuses on donations to enhance the patient experience by providing materials not included in the annual budgets.
Since 2010, Women’s Legacy Circle has awarded more than 100 grants up to $12,000 each. This year they awarded the first Legacy Grant totaling $75,000 to support Community Health Initiatives.
“I really liked the idea of community outreach. It’s something useful in all of Carle’s markets,” Nancy Whitford, former president of the group who chairs the Women’s Legacy Circle Legacy Committee overseeing the gift said. Every year, the Women’s Legacy Circle asks Carle departments to submit requests for items not included in their budgets. A committee narrows down the requests and the entire membership has an opportunity to vote on which gift they support.
“It really is the perfect gift – outward facing, supportive of Carle’s mission and serving patient needs,” Lesa Brandt, director of leadership giving for Carle Health Center for Philanthropy, said.
