Urbana Campus Modernization Project

August 12, 2008

We are very excited and pleased that the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board today (August 12) unanimously approved Carle Foundation Hospital’s plan to modernize our Urbana campus. The $236 million project includes constructing a nine-story bed tower and modernizing existing space within the North Tower. In the future, this bed tower, combined with the North Tower, will become the cornerstone of our hospital campus.

By enhancing and consolidating our services for cardiovascular, neurosciences, intensive care, rehabilitation and digestive health, we will be able to better address emergent, acute and chronic conditions to improve the overall health of our community. The new bed tower will include 135 single patient rooms to replace inadequate rooms from buildings constructed in the 1960s and 1970s.

By modernizing our campus, Carle Foundation Hospital can better meet the healthcare demands of the residents in east central Illinois and prepare for our increasing aging population. We appreciate the Board’s consideration and approval of this campus modernization project. Their approval marks a huge step forward in our vision to provide world-class patient care and research.

The project is the result of months of planning and is the largest in our hospital’s nearly 80-year history. We submitted our Certificate of Need application on Feb. 29, 2008. We anticipate construction beginning this fall, with completion in 2012.

Highlights of the project include:

  • A new 348,400 square-foot, nine-story tower and 50,622 square feet of modernized space.
  • Nearly 100 percent private patient rooms.
  • The Carle Heart and Vascular Institute – a key component of this new structure. It will encompass outpatient and inpatient cardiovascular services, including eight catheterization labs and the relocation of cardiac intensive care, stepdown and medical beds within the bed tower.
  • An enlarged and modernized rehabilitation unit that will serve the needs of adult patients following a stroke or traumatic injuries.
  • Enhanced intensive care facilities, serving both adults and children.
  • Centralized space for our center for digestive health, through which we plan to increase awareness about preventing colon and rectal cancer.
  • The latest in equipment and technology, fostering an environment for Carle and the University of Illinois to better conduct translational research.
  • 50,026 square feet of space for physician offices.

Carle Foundation Hospital is a 305-bed tertiary care facility comprised of more than 25 departments including surgical, cardiovascular and neonatal intensive care units, level III perinatal services, the region's only Level I Trauma Center and the Carle Heart Center.
