Based in Urbana, Ill., the Carle Foundation Hospital is a 393-bed regional care hospital that has achieved Magnet® designation. It is the area's only Level 1 Trauma Center.

From health and dental to life insurance and retirement, Carle offers competitive benefits that meet the needs of you and your family.

Outlined below is an overview of available benefits at Carle. This list does not cover all benefits, and individual benefit programs may vary depending on employment status. Coverage begins the first of the month following employment for benefit eligible employees.


Eligible employees are offered a choice of two health plans, a PPO and High Deductible Health Plan with HSA. Both plans include 100% coverage on preventative care, In-Network and Out-of-Network coverage levels, and prescription coverage. Carle pays for up to 80% of premiums for full-time employees.


Our dental plan allows you to see any dental provider for services. Charges are covered at 100%, 80% or 50% of the usual and customary charges depending on the type of service.


Both health plans offer basic coverage for eye exams. Carle also offers a Supplemental Vision Plan that offers coverage for exams, frames, lenses, and contacts.

Life Insurance

As a part of your overall benefits, Carle provides a minimum amount of life insurance coverage. You may also choose to purchase additional coverage for yourself, your spouse, your domestic partner and eligible dependent children.

Time Off

Paid Leave

Carle offers eligible employees paid time off with 100% of your base pay by using your paid leave hours. Paid Leave accrues immediately upon hire and is available for use after only three months of employment.

Sick Bank

Eligible employees who are unable to work due to illness or injury may use Sick Bank hours to receive 100% of your base pay. Sick Bank hours accrue immediately upon hire and are available for use after only six months of employment.

Long Term Disability

For longer periods of disability, Carle offers disability coverage to eligible employees after 6 months of employment. The benefit pays 60% of your base pay after 90 days of an approved partial or total disability. Carle pays for 100% of Long Term Disability premiums.


Carle observes New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Eligible employees receive holiday benefits immediately upon hire.

Carle knows it is important to save for retirement, so all employees are eligible to contribute to the retirement plan immediately upon hire. Employer contributions begin after 1 year of employment.


Employee Contributions Immediately upon employment, all employees are eligible to contribute on a pre-tax or after-tax basis to a voluntary 403(b) or 401(k) account.

Employer Contributions: After meeting eligibility requirements, an employee is eligible for both a 2% employer match as well as a 5% annual contribution made by Carle. All contributions are immediately vested.

Spending Accounts

You also have the opportunity to enroll in flexible spending accounts that allow you to pay for medical and/or day care expenses before taxes. Debit card and Direct Deposit reimbursements are available for your convenience, subject to IRS maximums. Account balances must be used in full by the end of each year.

  • Health Care Flex Spending Account – Allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses for you and your eligible dependents.
  • Dependent Day Care Flex Spending Account – Allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to cover day care expenses for eligible dependents.
  • Limited Flex Spending Account – Allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to cover vision and/or dental expenses for eligible employees. This account can be paired with the High Deductible Health Plan with HSA

Health Savings Account

For employees who enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, a Health Savings Account (HSA) is available which allows pre-tax dollars to be set aside for use on health expenses now or in the future. Account balance continues to grow each year.

Prepaid Tuition Assistance

Employees receive prepaid assistance for tuition and fees (except health insurance and books) for work-related classes (eligibility rules apply). Employees can receive up to $4,000 in assistance, depending on employment status.

Employee Incentive Programs

The Employee Incentive Compensation Plan provides “bonus” monetary rewards beyond regular compensation to all eligible employees who help Carle achieve specific goals during the fiscal year.

Adoption Assistance

Carle provides eligible employees with adoption assistance to assist and support Carle employees and their families with the expenses incurred in the adoption of children. Depending on employment status, eligible Carle employees can receive up to $5,000 in adoption assistance per year.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Carle offers an Employee Assistance Program for short-term confidential counseling services to all employees and their household members at no cost. EAP counselors can help with relationship conflicts, emotional stress, alcohol and substance abuse, workplace problems, financial issues and more. EAP also offers free Senior Care Assessments as a telephone consultation to provide recommendations and support to eligible employees.

The Caring Place Day Care

The Caring Place is a child day care center close to the main Carle campus in Urbana, IL. The Caring Place accepts children ages 6 weeks to 12 years of age. Parents may observe children during the day through web cams. Carle employees are eligible to receive discounted child care services.

Employee Wellness

The Charge employee wellness program is designed to engage employees in health and wellness programs and activities that encourage and support healthy behaviors. The Charge program provides a free biometric screening, personal health assessment, 5K fun walk/run, and physical activity and nutrition challenges.

Charge uses a team challenge approach that encourages employees to utilize the strength and energy of their co-workers to be successful in adopting healthier habits. The more an employee participates, the more rewards they acquire and the more opportunity they have to win a variety of gifts and prizes!
