High Risk Pregnancy

Your pregnancy is considered "high-risk" if there is an increased chance that you or your baby may develop a certain condition or encounter a health problem during your pregnancy. Common conditions that can put you or your baby at "high-risk" during pregnancy include:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Kidney disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Smoking, using alcohol or illegal drugs
  • Being younger than 17 and older than 35
  • Problems in the past with pregnancy including preterm labor, preeclampsia, etc.
  • Having had three or more miscarriages
  • Your baby having a genetic condition such as Down syndrome or heart, lung, or kidney problems

Some of these conditions are managed by our obstetricians, perinatologists or both.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

At Carle, we provide special attention to you and your baby if any health problems arise. Through our Carle Fetal Care Center and Maternal Fetal Medicine Services, we use the most advanced diagnostics to monitor you and the health of your baby during pregnancy. We also provide education about potential pregnancy risks and the conditions we treat.

  • Multiple gestations (twins, triplets, etc.)
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Gestational diabetes or pre-pregnancy diabetes mellitus
  • Congenital anomalies of the fetus
