Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE)

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are crucial in ensuring that sexual assault patients receive more compassionate care. Specially trained nurses are able to reduce re-traumatization of patients and improve the quality of forensic evidence collection, which in turn increases prosecution rates of offenders.

Carle Foundation Hospital has one of the most active SANE programs in the state as the only downstate facility with 24 hour coverage for adult, adolescent and pediatric victims of sexual assault.

Our SANE program is in constant and active collaboration with community resources including (but not limited to) the in-house Child Abuse Safety Team, the Children’s Advocacy Center, law enforcement, local and regional states attorney’s offices, primary care and emergency medicine providers and DCFS.

The role of the SANE is to perform a physical as well as forensic exam, provide appropriate medications with the supervision of a physician, and ensure written and verbal information on the care provided and the follow-up the patient will need. They are also available to testify when the case goes to court. The SANEs remain objective and unbiased, as they consider themselves a piece of a puzzle that surrounds the event that brought the patient to the emergency room.

SANE nurses at Carle examine or consult on domestic violence and elder and pediatric abuse/neglect cases. No matter what the age, every patient who has experienced sexual assault will receive compassionate care by an expert examiner.
