Going into Labor

You should familiarize yourself with the warning signs of labor. You can find a full list of signs and symptoms of labor on page 46 of Great Expectations

What to Do When You’re in Labor

Before coming to Carle Foundation Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Unit, we ask that you call your prenatal care provider. In order to help the nursing staff be best prepared to care for you upon your arrival, be prepared to discuss the following during your call:

  • Are you having contractions? If so, how far apart and how long do they last?
  • Do you suspect that your water broke? Or is leaking?
  • How long would it take you to get to the hospital from your current location?

When to call your provider:

  • Your provider(s) will discuss what signs and symptoms to watch for during each stage of pregnancy. These recommendations can vary based on your specific pregnancy, your history, and how far along you are in your pregnancy.
  • If ever in doubt, please call.

If you think you are in labor and your prenatal care provider’s office is closed, please contact Carle Foundation Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Unit at (217) 383-3305 for instructions.

If you plan to deliver your baby at another hospital, please discuss specific instructions with your prenatal care provider.

Going to the Hospital

If you have been advised to seek care in Labor and Delivery or if you feel that you need to be evaluated, you will need to enter the Emergency Department through the entrance on Coler Street. Your partner may park in the Emergency Department parking lot and leave the vehicle there until after the baby is born. Enter the hospital through the Emergency Department. You may ask staff there for a wheelchair transport to Labor and Delivery if you are unable to walk on your own.

We recommend you designate one person who can call family and friends to update them on your progress. Family and friends who are not in the birthing room are welcome to wait in our family lounge, located on the 10th floor of the hospital’s North Tower. Please note nursing staff is not permitted to give out information about you or your baby due to patient confidentiality.

For more information on how to prepare for the arrival of your baby, please refer to page 45 of Great Expectations
