Free evaluation clinic offers an option for checking a sports/recreational injury
It is that time of year. High school sports are active and opportunities to participate in outdoor recreation are numbered.  Active individuals can overdo it.  Sometimes the result really hurts and you do not know why. Where do you turn?

Carle Sports Medicine offers a free injury evaluation clinic for sports or recreational related injuries at 2300 S. First St., Champaign where an athletic trainer can take a look and make recommendations for next steps.

The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.

The walk-in truly started more than 30 years ago with Dr. Edward Grogg, a pioneer in sports medicine who retired from Carle in 1991. He had a passion for sports medicine and founded the Center for Athletic Injury Research (CAIR) center located behind Mahomet-Seymour High School.

“He took care of athletes at his home in Mahomet for years. Athletes from the entire area would go to the Saturday morning injury evaluation clinic,” John Flannell, MS, ATC, PES, sports medicine supervisor for Carle Orthopedics and Sports Medicine said.

The athletic trainer on duty sees a full gamut of injuries at the free clinic. All activity-based injuries are welcome.  The clinic functions with no appointments, on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The injury walk-in clinic is perfect for athletes of all ages. It is a great stepping stone from the initial injury, into a treatment plan for the individual. This may include exercises to start doing on their own, or being recommended to follow-up with either their primary provider or one of our sports medicine providers. This is a great way for individuals to have a quick and free evaluation depending on the severity of the injury,” Athletic Trainer Kathleen Morrison, MS, ATC, CNC, said.

She said the evaluation also gives community members an opportunity to learn about athletic training and how the work involves athletes of all ages, not only local high schools.

If further care is needed by a physician, those visits are not free. To learn more about the clinic, you may call (217) 383-9500.
