Celebrating advancements in sustainability highlights the importance of innovation and continuous improvement that lies at the heart of this work. The Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Program allows healthcare organizations to benchmark their facilities’ performance in the key areas of energy, water and waste.
Benchmarking is essential because it offers a standard reference point for comparison. The Practice Greenhealth awards program allows Carle Health to measure each hospital’s performance and compare them to other hospitals within the same service area and of similar size.
Without benchmarking to provide context, identifying areas for improvement is just a guessing game. Benchmarking drives better decision making and allocation of resources by providing key insights into efficiency, innovation and cost effectiveness. It increases accountability and helps the system become better stewards of natural resources and the environment.
With the right tools, benchmarking becomes a process that turns numbers into clear action plans with achievable goals for improvement.

Practice Greenhealth states that more hospitals and health systems are tracking emissions, setting sustainability goals, and reporting meaningful cost savings as a result. In August, they delivered custom reports comparing sustainability data from the eight Carle Health hospitals to data from more than 700 other hospitals nationwide that participated in the 2026 awards program.
With energy costs and peak demand charges on the rise, improving energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important. The average Carle Health hospital Energy Use Intensity (EUI), a measure of energy consumption relative to size, outperforms 71 percent of other health systems that reported their EUI data.
