Carle NICU earns gold status, statewide recognition

Carle Foundation Hospital earned the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative Gold Award for Golden Hour Quality Improvement at the Illinois Perinatal Conference in December 2017. Carle is the only hospital in the state to receive the gold award for meeting four of the quality measures.

The “Golden Hour” ensures the region’s smallest babies have the best possible start at life by focusing on care during the first hour after birth.

Lisa Davis, NNP-BC, Perinatal Services, said because these babies are smaller and sicker, providing the type of care they need becomes more challenging.

“But to make their experience better and to improve the outcomes of these babies, to me, is amazing,” Davis said.

Carle’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) ranks in the top 20% for quality in Illinois. In July, Carle’s NICU advanced regional care by opening a small baby unit. Carle is just the fourth hospital in Illinois to use a small baby unit  and joins approximately 20 hospitals across the country dedicated to this advanced level of care.
