Hospital receives sought-after Comprehensive Stroke Center designation

Carle receives sought-after Comprehensive Stroke Center designation Carle Foundation Hospital gained certification as the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in downstate Illinois from DNV GL Healthcare. This designation reflects the highest level of competence for treating the full spectrum of stroke events, including the most severe and complex.

“With stroke care, you must have the best care teams and resources, but also the ability to act with extreme efficiency because of the time-critical nature of these events,” said Carle Neuroscience Institute Vice President Luke Sullivan. “This certification validates the work we’ve put into this program to ensure the health and safety of our patients.”

Carle cares for more than 700 stroke patients each year, allowing many to recuperate close to home. Carle addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education.

“Because of the world-class work of the entire stroke team, we can confidently say to patients and the region, ‘If you or a loved one is having a stroke, the best thing to do is call 911 and get to Carle right away,” said Carle endovascular neurosurgeon Amrendra Miranpuri, MD.

Carle Foundation Hospital gained certification as the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in downstate Illinois from DNV GL Healthcare. He emphasizes the necessity of high-quality comprehensive care close to home.

“A community as large as ours deserves to have a Comprehensive Stroke Center. We can treat patients and help them through rehabilitation here, which is easier for patients and for families during often difficult times.”

It’s no small feat to send someone with a complex stroke to another facility. And it’s not fair to send their loved ones so far away when they are dealing with so much,” Dr. Miranpuri said.

“For this kind of care, Carle goes shoulder to shoulder with Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis and other big cities.”

For the last 10 years, Carle maintained Primary Stroke Center designation. Carle earned the top-level designation late last month with its first Comprehensive Stroke Center certification visit.

“We work hard to educate everyone about the signs of a stroke before they happen so people get medical help quickly,” said Carle Stroke Program Coordinator Erin Eddy, BSN. “By calling 911, Carle Arrow Ambulance paramedics and EMTs can start important pre-hospital care for the smoothest possible hand-off to the hospital team.”

The DNV GL Healthcare Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification uses standards from the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association. Comprehensive stroke centers are the best-equipped hospitals to treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. DNV GL is a world-leading certification body that operates in more than 100 countries.
