Carle Health hospitals recognized for excellence in stroke treatment
Conditions that impact the brain often come with no warning, and with a stroke, receiving treatment quickly helps save lives. At Carle Health, our hospitals are structured to intervene quickly to treat patients with stroke symptoms with quality care that optimizes their recovery.

Carle Foundation Hospital (CFH) is the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in Central Illinois, featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. Carle BroMenn Medical Center (CBMC) and Carle Health Methodist Hospital (CHMH) are both Primary Stroke Centers and, like CFH, offer an inpatient rehabilitation unit for patients recovering from a stroke, or other illness or injury.

Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center, Carle Eureka Hospital, Carle Richland Memorial Hospital, Carle Health Proctor Hospital and Carle Health Pekin Hospital are Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals. Teams at each location are ready to begin stroke care and transfer patients to a higher level of care as needed.

Several of these facilities have earned American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines® (GWTG) designations for ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. Consistent adherence to these guidelines can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and may prevent death.

The Carle Health adherence to GWTG means strict quality achievement measures were met in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke. This includes proper medication and treatment, reducing mortality rates, quick recovery and limiting disability because of stroke.

“The stroke recognition is well deserved,” Jill Dodaro, Carle Health Greater Peoria vice president and chief nursing officer, said. “Carle Health’s west region has a robust Stroke Interdisciplinary Committee which includes nursing, physicians, neurologists, therapies, laboratory, pharmacy, and more. This team ensures the highest quality of care is provided and that has been validated by this recognition. Our patients are guaranteed to be cared for by a well-qualified and educated team member in all areas of care.”

This year, Carle Foundation Hospital is receiving the Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll. At CFH, 75 percent of applicable patients experience door-to-needle times of 45 minutes or less, and 50 percent of applicable patients experience door-to-needle times of 30 minutes or less.

"Achieving this designation is possible thanks to the incredible efforts of our team members," said Kristin Pritts, Director of Quality, Carle Foundation Hospital. “This recognition means that we meet strict quality measures in diagnosing and treating stroke. When patients come to Carle Heath for care, they can be confident that we're dedicated to providing them with the best possible outcomes."

Carle BroMenn Medical Center is receiving the Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Target: Stroke Honor Roll. At CBMC, 75 percent of applicable patients experience door-to-needle times of 60 minutes or less.

"At Carle BroMenn Medical Center, our stroke care team is committed to pursuing the best outcome for each patient. Get With The Guidelines® designation exemplifies our commitment to helping ensure lifesaving success in treating our patients," said Melissa Reidy, Neuroscience nurse manager and Stroke program coordinator, Carle BroMenn Medical Center. "Our patients know they can count on Carle Health for excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke. Our team can be proud of this recognition. It highlights their everyday efforts to provide excellent stroke care at BroMenn and throughout the health system at our respective stroke programs."

Carle Health Methodist Hospital is receiving the Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll. CHMH met specific criteria that reduces the time between an eligible patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment.

Carle Health Methodist, Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle BroMenn Medical Center are also being recognized with the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award. This means ensuring patients with Type 2 diabetes, who may be at higher risk of complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized for stroke.

For the first time, Carle Health Proctor and Pekin Hospitals are both receiving the Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Silver Plus Award, with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

Carle Eureka Hospital is receiving a GWTG-Stroke Rural Health Silver recognition, the highest recognition that a hospital can receive in its second year.

“We are very excited to receive this honor and designation from AHA. Our staff, providers and Quality Team are committed to providing our patients with evidence-based care on a daily basis and this award with Get with the Guidelines is a testament to this,” Beth Thomas, Carle Health Greater Peoria Manager of Accreditation and Patient Safety Officer, said. “By following Get With The Guidelines® measures, we are able to improve the care of our patients and provide them with the best health outcomes possible.”

Carle Health strives to intervene as early as possible for patients with stroke symptoms and continues to provide quality care to patients after a stroke, with the goal of optimizing their recovery. Our leading-edge medical facilities, technology and techniques mean our providers can perform advanced diagnostic and interventional procedures to help minimize the effects of stroke.
