Carle Health on Aug. 19 became only the seventh healthcare organization nationwide to receive – with Distinction – the nation’s highest honor for nursing and organizational excellence.
Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Carle Physician Group offices throughout the area and Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center in Hoopeston earned Magnet with Distinction Recognition® from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®.
Healthcare centers attain Magnet designation when they prove they support and empower nurses and interdisciplinary teams and are structured to create better health outcomes for patients.
“This Distinction is an incredible validation of the outstanding team at Carle Health and their unwavering dedication to our patients,” Elizabeth Angelo, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Carle Foundation Hospital president said.
Carle Hoopeston earned Magnet designation for the first time, Carle Foundation Hospital received Magnet recognition for the fourth time and Carle Physician Group attained its third Magnet designation. Only ten percent of healthcare organizations nationwide are Magnet-designated and less than three percent have earned four or more designations.
The recognition was announced during a video conference attended by more than 600 nursing team leaders and nurses. Sharon Pappas, ANCC Commission on Magnet Executive Committee Vice-Chair, said the designation approval vote was unanimous.
These Carle Health entities also received three Magnet exemplars, meaning nurses exceeded Magnet’s thresholds for nurse satisfaction and for two patient outcomes measures in ambulatory nursing: depression screening and follow-up and hemoglobin A1c control.
“As an organization focused on providing top decile care and service to our patients and community, our continued Magnet designation demonstrates and underscores our commitment to excellence,” Lynette Marx, MBA, BSN, RN, NPD-BC, nurse retentionist, said. “Quality care and service have long been proven at Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Physician Group,” Marx said. “We have always known that care at Carle Hoopeston is high quality. Patients there receive excellent care and service and benefit from the strength of the Carle Health system.”
The ANCC reviews Magnet designated facilities for their transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge and empirical outcomes.
“Nurses at Carle Foundation Hospital, Carle Physician Group and Carle Hoopeston utilize best practices to advance the health and well-being of patients,” Jaymie Green, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer, Carle Health, said. “For our team members, Magnet designation is a validation of hard work and commitment to the communities we serve.”
The application was 3,000 pages and included 105 stories highlighting initiatives, projects and accomplishments, and virtual site visits by appraisers from the Magnet program office.
At Carle Hoopeston, Magnet designation is heart-warming, Reilly Stebbins, BSN, RN, manager of clinical operations, said. “I see the hard work that this team does every day,” Stebbins said. “Everyone here is hands-on. We support each other. We build relationships with patients and family members. A Magnet designation proves what we already know – that our patients get Magnet-level care every day.”
Magnet status recruits and retains nurses, Powell said. “Nurses appreciate being able to give excellent patient care and continue their professional growth. Receiving Magnet status rewards not just nurses but Carle Health and our communities.”
