Carle Health wins Greenhealth Champion Award from Practice Greenhealth
Carle Health has received the Greenhealth Champion Award from Practice Greenhealth for advancing sustainability and improving the environmental performance of our healthcare facilities across the system. Practice Greenhealth is a leading sustainability organization working to deliver healthcare-specific environmental solutions nationwide.

This award demonstrates Carle Health’s commitment and strides in this space, earning a Greenhealth Champion Award for 2026. This level of significance is given to healthcare organizations that champion the development and expansion of sustainability programs within their systems.

Ongoing participation with Practice Greenhealth allows Carle Health to benchmark the performance of our healthcare facilities in areas like energy usage and diversion of food waste from landfills. This benchmarking informs goals and future initiatives throughout the system to drive positive change and track the progress of environmental performance.

“It’s essential to understand where each hospital currently stands in areas like waste generation and water use. When we have a clear picture of where we are now, we can create specific, realistic goals about how to improve,” Savannah Donovan, sustainability program coordinator, Carle Health, said. “This award acknowledges that Carle Health is doing the important foundational work to improve our environmental footprint.”

With the many connections between environmental health and population health, it’s important to understand the impact of the health system on surrounding communities. Sustainability projects help reduce the environmental footprint of each facility and create healthier environments for the communities we serve. Carle Health continues to commit more resources to support our sustainability strategy to benefit patients and team members.

“Taking time to take measure and celebrate our continuous improvement is what drives innovation and keeps us moving towards Carle Health’s north star of being a trusted partner in healthcare,” Anthony Corso, sustainability and energy manager, Carle Health, said.

This year’s application included all eight hospitals for system-level recognition. Data was submitted from each hospital in the categories of:
  • Climate/Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Waste
  • Food
  • Leadership
  • Goals
“The hope is that this effort will raise awareness of important sustainability and environmental stewardship opportunities in healthcare,” Corso said. “And to inspire both team members and community partners to join if the efforts to move the needle on issues that matter most to them.”

As we continue to plan for providing quality care into the future, the recognition from receiving the Practice Greenhealth 2026 Greenhealth Champion Award is an indication of the system’s commitment and progress to provide modern, sustainable care.

“This award recognizes our commitment to making improvements for a healthier and more sustainable present and future for all,” Donovan said. “What could be more important than that? I think this is the most critical work any of us can do, and we all have a part to play.”
