Co-Responder Social Services Unit cuts ribbon on new facility in Peoria
The Co-Responder Social Services Unit (SSU) – a partnership between the Peoria Police Department and Trillium Place, an affiliate of Carle Health – celebrated an important milestone Friday as project leaders cut the ribbon on a brand-new facility in Peoria.

The SSU team works alongside police officers to address community calls, providing essential victim support and mental health assistance as needed.

Made up of qualified mental health professionals, the SSU team specializes in de-escalation and behavioral health interventions with a strong emphasis on victim advocacy and connecting individuals to community resources.

The SSU team operates solely within the City of Peoria and collaborates with Trillium Place’s Mobile Crisis Response to strengthen community support.

“This program will benefit our community in numerous ways: enhancing crisis response, providing resources to better support law enforcement and hospitals, and offering comprehensive support for victims and individuals involved in conflict,” Shamim Jaleel, Director of the Co-Responder Social Services Unit, said.

State and local leaders, partnering organizations, staff and community members gathered Friday to cut the ribbon on a new facility on Peoria’s Main Street.

There, behavioral health specialists and law enforcement officers will work together to co-respond in the community to provide exceptional care and support to people in crisis.

“Trillium Place is always committed to providing comprehensive mental health treatment services to assist individuals every step of the way. This program helps put the right people in the right place at the right time in a community-minded way. Together, we can and will create better outcomes for the people of Peoria,” Derrick Booth, Trillium Place Executive Director of Community Services, said.

The Co-Responder Social Services Unit currently consists of a social worker and a data management analyst, with a second social worker set to join the team in January 2025. The Unit is still in the process of hiring six additional specialists and an administrative assistant.

“The outpouring of support for this initiative has been incredible, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to bringing our vision to life,” Jaleel said. “We are excited to operate in this new facility on Main Street, which will make our clinical specialists more accessible when they are needed most.”
