Program Description
The Program
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) was the first residency program offered by Carle and was founded in 1948. Physicians and residents operate two outpatient clinics within Carle Physician Group; one at Carle Foundation Hospital and one at Carle Outpatient Services at The Fields in Champaign. The department sees nearly 15,000 patient visits annually, with over 1,750 IV sedations and general anesthetics administered for over 3,750 procedures per year.
OMFS providers are in the main operating room three days a week. Additional main operating room time is utilized as needed. Residents are usually in the operating room three to five days a week. In addition to the main operating room at Carle Foundation Hospital, the surgeons also utilize the ambulatory surgery center at Carle Outpatient Services at The Fields in Champaign.
Facilities
Carle is a multi-specialty group practice with more than 500 physicians and 300 APPs practicing in more than 80 specialties and subspecialties. Carle serves the healthcare needs of more than one million patients in 42 Illinois and western Indiana counties.
In addition to a 24-hour Emergency Department, Carle Foundation Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center. The Hospital is a leader in management of outpatient surgical procedures and opened its first of two free standing ambulatory surgery and recovery centers in 1996.
Carle Foundation Hospital is the primary clinical facility for the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
Curriculum
Residency training at Carle OMFS includes hands-on patient care experience in clinic and hospital settings with a significant amount of time spent in the operating room.
Clinical Experience
Resident clinical experience at Carle is exceptional. During the first year, residents will spend two months on Internal Medicine, and the remainder of the year they are assigned to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service. The second year, residents spend five months on Anesthesia, two months on General Surgery and one month on ICU. The remainder of the second year is spent on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service. In the third year, residents spend two months on Trauma and Critical Care, one month on ENT, one month on Plastic Surgery, two weeks on Quality and Patient Safety, and two weeks on Neurosurgery. The remainder of the year is spent on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service. The entire fourth year is spent on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service.
