Since opening in 2023, Carle Danville Medical Office Center at The Riverfront has improved access to quality care and wellness resources for Vermilion County. With an aim to keep care close to home but in a modern, safe care environment, The Riverfront consolidated services from the two existing Carle Health facilities in Danville. The Surgery Center is a key service at The Riverfront, bringing advanced surgical and recovery services to Danville. This extends the 25-year legacy Carle Health has providing surgical services in Danville and Vermilion County, even before the creation of the Carle Danville Medical Office Center at The Riverfront.
Alongside colonoscopies, a range of procedures across many areas of medicine are performed at the center. These include:
- Cholecystectomies
- Port placements
- Hernia repair
- Tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies
- Tubal ligations
- Cataract removal
- Cardioversions
- Carpal tunnel surgery
Candi Murphy visited The Riverfront Surgery Center in March of 2026 for a colonoscopy.
“My maternal grandpa and mother both died of colon cancer so I take colonoscopies very seriously and understand their importance,” Murphy said. While Murphy lives in Urbana, after receiving notice that The Riverfront was open for an appointment, she called to schedule her visit.
“Parking was easy, checking in was easy,” Murphy said. “The rooms were very spacious and had an on-suite bathroom which was wonderful. And it was clean. I didn’t have to wait in the waiting room.”
The space is centralized to allow a patient’s care team to provide treatment and monitor the patient’s recovery in one space. The design of the center prioritizes the comfort, privacy and safety of patients and their loved ones before, during and after treatment.
The Surgery Center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology in the operating and procedure rooms as well as in the pre-op and post-op areas for improved patient assessment.
The Surgery Center also received the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Go Clear™ Award in March 2026. This award recognizes facilities that make surgical smoke evacuation a top priority. The Riverfront Surgery Center is one of only 23 facilities in Illinois have received this distinction. For Murphy, the ease of scheduling her visit made the preparation work before her procedure better.
“I’m a morning person, so it was great to have the option of the morning, especially when you have to fast [before a colonoscopy]. No waiting around not eating,” Murphy said. “You schedule the appointment with the understanding that it may change if there’s an emergency, but the communication for when it would be is huge for me. It made an unpleasant experience incredibly doable.”
Colonoscopies remain the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening and prevention.
“The number two cancer killer is colorectal cancer. Screening colonoscopy can allow for early detection of cancer with a presumed better prognosis or hopefully to prevent colorectal cancer all together,” Dean Scavone, MD, general surgery, Carle Danville Medical Office Center at The Riverfront, said. Dr. Scavone conducted Murphy’s colonoscopy and understands the importance of increasing access for diagnostic procedures.“The greatest benefit of having the surgery center in Danville is the convenience it provides the patient population as well as the local providers,” Dr. Scavone said.
With rising cases of younger adults in the U.S. diagnosed with colorectal cancer, Carle Health and Christie Clinic are partnering to create the Champaign Endoscopy Center opening later in 2026.
This new facility will expand the colonoscopy and upper endoscopy services from Carle Foundation Hospital and the Champaign Surgery Center, improving local access to critical care services.
“It [The Riverfront Surgery Center] alleviated a lot of barriers that are the reason for hating colonoscopies. Even though I’m retired, my time is my greatest commodity. And they respected my time,” Murphy said. “It was just so great. It was worth the drive. From coming in and speaking with me, the size of the facility, and my experience with the surgeon.”
