Carle Health Pekin Hospital leaders celebrated the hospital’s nursing excellence and organizational accomplishments on Tuesday night with inspiring remarks, unveiling commemorative banners, honoring longtime nurses and showcasing new technology.
With team members, community partners and local leaders in attendance, Carle Health Pekin celebrated the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® recently conferring Magnet® recognition to the Pekin hospital for the first time.
Magnet recognition is a mark of nursing and organizational excellence. Hospitals attain the designation when they prove – through detailed documentation and during unscripted site visits by appraisers – they support and empower nurses and interdisciplinary teams, which results in better patient outcomes.
The night included the celebration of the hospital’s recent technological advances and safety accomplishments – areas of focus as the hospital team continues to bring excellent care close to home.
“Carle Health Pekin is a high-quality hospital that you can trust for your health care needs,” Tony Howard, vice president of support services for the Carle Health Greater Peoria Service Area, said. “Carle Health Pekin is your local community hospital, and we have nationally recognized nursing care and state-of-the-art imaging and testing equipment to meet all your health care needs. You can count on Carle to continue to bring outstanding clinical quality to our community.”
Unveiling Magnet designation banners were Howard, Jill Dodaro, MSN, MBA, Greater Peoria Service Area chief nursing officer and vice president, and Cara Crumrine, BSN, RN-BC, Magnet Program Director/Nurse Retentionist, Carle Health Greater Peoria Service Area.
“Tonight, we celebrate this recognition and our contribution to the community by unveiling three special Magnet designation banners that will remain here in the facility for our patients and team members to see - a sign of excellence that our team members and providers already wear every day when they come in to care for community members,” Howard said. “This Magnet designation shows that we exceed national healthcare benchmarks in patient satisfaction, safety and nurse engagement in our pursuit of improving the health outcomes of everyone we serve.”
Dodaro noted that the Magnet program team filed its submission for the Greater Peoria hospitals – Carle Health Pekin, Carle Health Methodist and Carle Health Proctor – in October 2023 with more than 600 pages of documentation. After ANCC approved the submission, appraisers from their Magnet Program Office visited all three hospitals March 12 - 14, 2024, to validate what’s in the documentation.
On May 16, ANCC conferred its first-ever Magnet recognition to Carle Health Pekin, its fifth Magnet designation to Carle Health Methodist and its second Magnet designation to Carle Health Proctor.
“Only 10% of healthcare organizations nationwide are Magnet-designated,” Dodaro said.
“I can’t say enough about the work our nurses do on a daily basis and the difference they make in the lives of patients through their passion, dedication and expertise,” Dodaro said. “Every day at Carle Pekin, they not only bring that passion to the bedside but into efforts outside of our hospital walls that improve the Pekin community overall.”
Community members and attendees experienced an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of some of the most regarded areas of the hospital after remarks. They learned about the timely response and capabilities of the lab, improved diagnostic services through upgraded Nuclear Medicine service to Spect CT equipment, state-of-the-art 3D mammography and new ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound System) technology, among other things.
Pekin Mayor Mary Burress said “I have lived in Pekin for 50 years and this hospital always has been a staple of our community. Magnet recognition proves that Pekin hospital is a great amenity in our community. Not too many communities of this size have a hospital of this magnitude.”
While it was fitting to share the moment with the community and partners who help elevate the work of the Carle Health Pekin team, the staff were the most excited to come together and recognize the accomplishment.
Nina Walliker, RN, 4 North, who has worked at the hospital for 27 years, said “We’ve always been proud of the care we give. This (Magnet designation) is a reflection of our commitment to our patients and this community.”
