Atrial Fibrillation Related Stroke
Many of our patients with atrial fibrillation are at risk for stroke and need anticoagulation therapy. However, some patients have a high risk of developing a bleeding problem with long-term use of this type of therapy. This is especially true if a patient is frail or has a history of bleeding, such as bleeding in the stomach or intestines and/or brain (cerebral hemorrhage). New medications and procedures help manage the risks of both stroke and bleeding in these patients.
PFO Related Stroke
Although a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common incidental finding in many patients, it can be associated with stroke in patients who are younger (PFO-related stroke). Recently, randomized controlled trials have shown transcatheter closure of PFOs, along with medical therapy, reduces the risk of recurrent stroke.
