Level III Perinatal Services

Level III perinatal services are provided by hospitals caring for high-risk mothers and newborns. These hospitals operate a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a specialized hospital unit, designed to treat infants born with birth defects, difficulties or life-threatening conditions. These hospitals are also certified to transport, care for and treat sick infants who are transferred from other hospitals. If your baby is born prematurely, with birth defects, infections, breathing difficulties or other conditions, Carle has specially trained providers, Neonatologists, who are here to give your baby the best care possible.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

As the only hospital in the region offering Level III Perinatal services, Carle's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by our team of neonatologists and obstetricians. Our 48-bed unit is more than 10, 000 square feet and offers privacy and comfort to our tiniest patients. We also have a designated lounge for families and an overnight space for "rooming-in" where parents can stay with their babies and transition to caring for them before heading home.

With more than 500 babies admitted per year, our NICU staff use state-of-the art equipment and diagnostics to continually monitor and treat newborns. Whether your baby's stay with is only for a few days or an extended period of time, we understand the NICU can be a scary and unfamiliar place to both you and your baby. Our team of providers, nurses and staff are here to help you understand more about the NICU and to help answer any questions you may have about your baby's treatment, development and discharge.

NICU and Maternal Transport Team

Carle offers the transport of premature or critically ill newborns to Carle Foundation Hospital’s Level III NICU via air and ground ambulance. The NICU transport team consists of highly trained registered nurses and respiratory therapists who specialize in neonatal care and procedures.

Carle also provides a maternal transport team, available to transport high-risk expectant mothers who may have borne a premature infant or have a medical issue after delivery. Our transport team is specially trained in high-risk protocols to continue medication and treatment for mothers during transport. If the expectant mother is not stable enough for transport, the NICU transport team can be sent for delivery.

All transport teams are on-call 24/7.

NICU and Charitable Giving

Every year, hundreds of individuals and organizations give to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Carle. Their generosity makes the healthcare experience for our tiniest patients and their families extraordinary. If you would like to support the Carle NICU, please visit our donation page.

Carle's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is happy to be the first in Illinois to offer the NICVIEW Web Camera System. These live streaming cameras allow parents with up to 24/7 viewing of their baby while he or she is in the NICU. This enables parents to see their baby even when they are not on site and allows other family members who live far away, siblings that are not able to enter the NICU or deployed parents to view and bond with Baby from afar. NICVIEW cameras are protected by encrypted transmission and are only accessible to specified users using passwords issued by the NICU. This service is generously funded by Carle Center for Philanthropy.
