Examples of the Upswing: Local Solutions and Opportunities
Hosted by Carle in collaboration with the University of Illinois and Carle Illinois College of Medicine, the goals of the Environmental Justice and Racism Roundtable are to:
This virtual session on environmental justice in Central Illinois aims to increase healthcare providers’ awareness of local issues and actions. You'll hear from environmental justice experts in state and local governments, community organizations, and medical education. Additionally, you'll learn about Carle’s community health initiatives and opportunities to get involved in solutions.
Training on environmental justice is a necessary part of healthcare competencies. Poverty, racism, discriminatory housing practices, land uses and gaps in enforcing laws are linked to exposures to air pollutants, contaminated drinking water, sewage, industrial wastes, heat, cold, mold and other health determinants. Uses of healthcare services, food insecurity and access to natural areas are also related to environmental justice.
COVID-19 demonstrated that environmental justice issues shape many aspects of health needs, disparities, treatments and programs. Environmental justice should be at the forefront of actions to reduce the harms of climate change.
Such large environmental and social challenges extend far beyond hospitals and medical clinics. Yet, increasing awareness of local environmental justice issues and solutions will improve your healthcare services and engagement in community health needs.
