A family medicine career offers physicians a vast array of opportunities. It is the only specialty that offers the fulfillment of caring for your patient from cradle to grave and caring for their circle of friends, neighbors and family.
The Carle Family Medicine Residency program is no longer accepting applications. Interested applicants are encouraged to review the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria Family Medicine Residency program, with training at Carle Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria, Illinois.
The Carle BroMenn Family Medicine Residency is a three-year training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Established in 2005, the program provides superior education and experiential learning to physicians as professionals so that they can practice high-quality, evidence-based healing care with persons of all ages and backgrounds through relationships that foster respect and compassion. It is a clinically-oriented residency program, focused on teaching all aspects of general family medicine with the intent of providing residents with the requisite knowledge and skill to enter the medical workforce as an exemplary family medicine physician in the inpatient or outpatient setting or to pursue fellowship training.
The program features daily noon didactics, monthly journal clubs and quarterly grand rounds. Didactics may include lectures led by residents, students, attendings and ancillary staff on a variety of topics such as, but not limited to, patient care clinical content, billing and coding, medical ethics, various therapy and social work services, and focused musculoskeletal lectures and labs. The program utilizes an on-site advanced Simulation Training Laboratory for additional experience in a wide spectrum of clinical scenarios. The program also has a butterfly ultrasound unit within the Family Health Clinic for resident training and patient care through use of point of care ultrasound (POCUS). Residents establish clinical and patient management skills through continuity care of patients within the Family Health Clinic setting. The program also fosters wellness among residents with monthly activities.
Resident Performance Evaluation
At the end of each block rotation, residents receive a written and verbal evaluation from the attending with whom they worked most closely. Residents complete a biannual self-evaluation focusing on their personal and work-related goals, skills and development plan. Residents take an annual in-training examination that is similar to the family medicine certification examination. Continuity clinic preceptors share verbal evaluation daily, providing residents with more immediate feedback. Peer and non-physician staff evaluations occur annually, in addition to the monthly rotation evaluations and ACGME Milestone evaluations. Milestone evaluations are used twice per year to evaluate the performance levels residents are expected to demonstrate for skills, knowledge and behaviors in the six core competency domains of Family Medicine.
The resident is offered the independence of managing and caring for patients in an ambulatory setting with a structured teaching program. Specialty rotations are scheduled to strengthen the resident's learning in the major sub-specialties. Instruction and training in medicine, psychosocial development and practice management are integrated into the curriculum.
