Pharmacy Residency

The Carle Foundation Hospital Pharmacy Residency programs are ASHP accredited, 12-month postgraduate curricula that offer broad training opportunities in various clinical settings. Residents gain experience in direct patient care, teaching, research, and pharmacy operations while working closely with an experienced group of pharmacy preceptors as part of a multidisciplinary medical team to support optimal medication therapy outcomes. In addition, residents manage medication-use systems to provide safe and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to patients. The programs prepare residents to be highly qualified independent practitioners able to pursue a multitude of career paths upon completion of the PGY1 or PGY2 program.

Program Description

Carle Foundation hospital (CFH) is a 498-bed teaching hospital located in Urbana, IL that offers a Level I Trauma Center with a 24-hour emergency department and certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.  

The Carle Foundation Hospital PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program is a 12-month postgraduate curriculum that offers a broad area of training opportunities in various clinical settings.  During the residency program, the residents will gain experience in direct patient care, teaching, research, and pharmacy operations.  The residents will work closely with an experienced group of pharmacy preceptors as part of a multidisciplinary medical team to support optimal medication therapy outcomes.  In addition, they will manage medication-use systems to provide safe and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to patients.  The residency program will prepare residents to be highly qualified independent practitioners able to pursue a multitude of career paths upon completion of the PGY1 program.

Committee Involvement

Residents are required to be a participating member of one department level committee and may have opportunities to be involved with other interdepartmental committees depending on availability and need. Committee involvement may include taking meeting minutes and other committee work when necessary.

Research

Residents are responsible for formulating and executing one major quality improvement or clinical research project. The chosen project topic must be approved by the longitudinal project rotation advisor, followed by the Residency Advisory Committee, prior to commencement. Results are expected to be presented at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference.

Teaching Certificate

Residents have the opportunity to obtain a teaching certificate from SIUE School of Pharmacy. Requirements for the certificate begin during orientation.

Staffing

Consistent with ASHP Guidelines, each resident is required to complete a pharmacy practice component (often referred to as “staffing”) of the residency program. The practice component is crucial to the development of professional practice skills and of pharmacy practice distribution skills. The staffing component of the program begins after residents have successfully completed their month of orientation. Residents are required to staff the Inpatient Pharmacy one weekend every other week (8-hour shifts on both Saturday and Sunday). In addition, residents are required to cover one major holiday (Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day) and one minor holiday (Memorial Day, Labor Day, or New Year’s Day).

Purpose Statement
The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency to develop clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. Residents have opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge in the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents are prepared for advanced patient care, academic or other specialized positions, and board certifications, if available. The residency program is designed to comply with the published accreditation standards of the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP).

Program Description

Carle Foundation hospital (CFH) is a 498-bed teaching hospital located in Urbana, IL that offers a Level I Trauma Center with a 24-hour emergency department and certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.  

The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program will provide an opportunity to gain critical care training in a fast-paced environment and develop the capability to deal with the range of diseases and disorders that occur in critically ill patients. The ICU unit is a 48-bed inpatient unit serving trauma, general surgery, medical, cardiovascular and neurosurgical critical care. 

This one-year residency program consists of 7-week core rotations in medical-surgical, cardiovascular, neurosurgical critical care and emergency medicine. Elective rotations include antimicrobial stewardship, neonatal and pediatric intensive critical care, trauma, emergency medicine II and psychiatry.  The range of elective rotation duration can vary between 2-6 weeks accommodating the resident’s preferences and interests.  The resident will have an opportunity to precept a PGY-1 pharmacy resident or pharmacy student during rotation and participates in emergency response through a longitudinal rotation. The resident is required to staff in the critical care unit every third weekend (8-hour shifts from 7:00 am-3:30 pm) and central pharmacy once every fourth week (8-hour shifts from 13:00 pm-21:30 pm).  In addition, the resident is required to cover one major holiday (Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day) and one minor holiday (Memorial Day, Labor Day, or New Years Day).

Salary and Benefits


Estimated Stipend

  • PGY1: Approximately $47,500, paid biweekly. Residents may work additional internal shifts at pharmacist pay rate outside of their residency requirements.
  • PGY-2: Approximately $51,300, paid biweekly. Residents may work additional internal shifts at pharmacist pay rate outside of their residency requirements.

Paid Leave 
Each resident will earn 17 days of annual paid vacation in addition to six paid holidays and one paid personal holiday each year for a day of their choosing per 12-month contract period. PTO will be used toward attending educational leave excluding the SIUE resident Boot Camp and Great Lakes Resident Conference. PTO can also be used for vacation, personal illness, interviews, illness of a family member or other personal business. Earned but unused PTO will be paid out upon completion of the residency program.

How to Apply


Eligibility

  • Graduate of a Doctor of Pharmacy program from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy
  • Legal working status in the United States to cover the entire period of residency training
  • Eligibility for pharmacist licensure in the state of Illinois (residents are expected to obtain licensure by August 1)
  • Hold an Illinois pharmacy technician license if not registered as a pharmacist in the state of Illinois prior to residency program start date
  • PGY-2: All of the above, plus completion of a PGY1 ASHP-accredited or pending accreditation program
Application Process 

The Carle Foundation Hospital PGY1 and PGY2 residency programs participate in the ASHP Resident Matching Program (the “Match”), and adheres to the rules of the Match. Applicants must adhere to the rules of the resident matching program. Applications must be submitted electronically in the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) at http://www.ashp.org/phorcas . All applications must be submitted by the predetermined date selected in PhORCAS.

Applicants must provide a current curriculum vitae, letter of intent, three letters of recommendation and pharmacy school transcripts. If selected for an on-site interview, the applicant will be required to give a brief presentation and answer clinical questions as part of the interview process.
