Clinical Pastoral Education

Our ACPE-accredited clinical pastoral education (CPE) at Carle BroMenn Medical Center is an intensive, experiential education-for-ministry program for spiritual leaders interested in developing clinical skills. Students engage in spiritual care ministry and reflect on their experience with a certified educator and peer group. Key areas for learning include integrating theology into pastoral practice, formation as a spiritual leader and self-reflection.

Community-Based Extended Chaplain Internship
This six-month, part-time program is for ordained and lay ministers working in community agencies and congregations, with clinical time divided between the student’s home setting and the hospital. Education is designed to enhance ministry in outpatient and community settings and is held in a hybrid of remote and in-person settings. Interns earn one unit of CPE for this program.

Chaplain Residency
This full-year program is for people seeking education to become a professional chaplain. It provides in-depth study of spiritual care theory and practice to gain the necessary skills and self-awareness for certification as a hospital chaplain or other professional. Residents usually have earned a single unit of CPE before starting the program and earn an additional four units of CPE during the year.

Information for Applicants
Students must pay a deposit to hold an intern or residency position once offered. Students may not begin a program until they've complied with the mandated pre-employment physical exam, drug screening and criminal record background check.
