Vascular Surgery Residency

The Carle Vascular Surgery Residency is a five-year, large community hospital training program affiliated with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Residents enjoy access to experienced subspecialist faculty in a vibrant residency training system situated in a culturally diverse college town in the heart of Illinois. The program accepted its first class in July 2020. Our residents enjoy an atmosphere of comradery and mentorship that permits early autonomy. The Carle Vascular Surgery Residency is dedicated to equipping its graduates with the skills and knowledge that will position them well to be leaders in vascular surgery.

How to Apply GME Experience

Program Description

Program Mission

We educate compassionate, proficient and insightful physicians committed to evidence based patient care and the advancement of the art and science of vascular surgery.

Overall Educational Goals

  • The residency is an integrated training program designed to develop residents who desire to become board-certified vascular surgeons.
  • Our program utilizes a high volume surgical practice in an academic, semirural environment to prepare graduates of the highest caliber for a broad scope of career opportunities.
  • We strive to train residents to become competent, confident, and compassionate surgeons who will deliver quality evidence-based surgical care in either the community or academic setting.
  • Carle provides a supportive educational environment that fosters the development of ACGME core competencies that embody professionalism, lifelong learning, personal growth, and a commitment to compassionate care among students, residents and faculty.
  • Residents will be exposed to world-class clinical and didactic training, including a broad scope of open and endovascular techniques, for managing vascular diseases. They are expected to enter practice without direct supervision and attain certification in vascular surgery.

Curriculum

Residency training in vascular surgery includes hands-on patient care experiences both in and out of the operating room as well as didactic sessions, interactive conferences and simulation. The core curriculum not only provides residents with exposure to the full spectrum of vascular surgery as science, it teaches about the social, economic and political issues that can affect surgical practice.
