Thanks to a generous contribution from a local donor, the space allows for the addition of a fitness routine to customized treatment programs. This access will enhance the experience available for patients to find better health outcomes in their journey to recovery.
“Fitness plays such an important part in recovery,” Robert Lizer, DO, Medical Director of the ARC, said. “When people are at their low and struggling with addiction, physical well-being is an integral part of the recovery process. It helps with positive neurobiological development and promotes healthy living physically, mentally and spiritually.”
Team members, ARC providers and community members gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the opening of the space and the generous contributions that helped make it possible.
Also in attendance was the primary donor, Sheryl, and her dog – Fletcher – whose loyalty and sweetness, she says, was the main inspiration behind her desire to support the project. A celebratory plaque displayed in the space dubs it the Fletcher Fitness Center.
“It means so much to us to give generous individuals like Sheryl and Fletcher the opportunity to give back for something they care deeply about, and make a difference,” Nicole Hayse, executive director of the Carle Health Center for Philanthropy – Greater Peoria, said. “This was Sheryl’s vision, and here we are today thanks to her.”
The space features an entirely new design including new flooring, fixtures, inspiring artwork and multiple types of exercise equipment including treadmills, stationary bikes, weight machines and more - all representative of a one-of-a-kind recovery environment in the Greater Peoria community.
It will be used daily as part of individual and customized treatment programming at the Addiction Recovery Center, which plays a key role in the larger continuum of comprehensive mental health and addiction recovery services offered within Trillium Place, an affiliate of Carle Health.
“This space means we are able to better meet the needs of our clients and provide them with the incredible sense of healing and accomplishment that exercise brings,” Mary Thompson, president of Trillium Place, said. “It is a safe space and such an important part of their recovery journey.”
Since 1979, the Addiction Recovery Center at Carle Health Proctor Hospital has provided lifesaving care for thousands of individuals in the community. The center offers an array of services and resources for drug and alcohol addiction and other behavioral addictions, such as gambling.
