How much do you know about blood clots?

Are you at risk of blood clots?

You’re more likely to develop this condition if you identify with the following risk factors:
  • Following a major surgery.
  • Recent major trauma, such as a broken bone or an injury to an organ.
  • Certain health conditions, such as cancer or a blood disorder that increases the risk for blood clots.
  • Hospitalized for an illness.
  • Unable to move your extremities for long periods of time.
  • Have a personal or family history of Venous thromboembolism (VTE).
  • 60 years of age or older.

Ways to prevent blood clots.

  • Actions you can take in your daily life to prevent blood clots include:
  • Stay active and exercise for 30 minutes or more every day.
  • Avoid sitting or lying in bed for long periods of time without moving your arms and legs.
  • Avoid crossing your legs when you are sitting.
  • Wear compression stockings as told by your healthcare provider. These stockings help to prevent blood clots and reduce swelling in your legs. Do not let them bunch up when you are wearing them.
  • Avoid wearing other tight clothing around your leg or waist.
  • Do not use any products that contain nicotine or tobacco. These products include cigarettes, chewing tobacco and vaping devices, such as e-cigarettes. This is especially important if you take estrogen medicines. If you need help quitting, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid using medicines that contain estrogen if you don’t need them. These include birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
